Wood Circle (Paperback): John Wilkinson Wood Circle (Paperback)
John Wilkinson
R400 Discovery Miles 4 000 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

"The pastoral has always been a civic genre: shepherds' songs written by city workers dreaming of release, of timely coincidence between feeling and nature. In Wood Circle, one of Wilkinson's most powerful poetic books, the green thought in a green shade perishes - wildfire destroys the canopy, the Calais jungle is cleared by immigration police. The pathetic fallacy is now literal, dawn chorus imitating car alarms. And yet, each line of this astonishing collection offers a new analysis of the earth's fever dreams. If 'None had loved enough what / they must find by losing', in this book's moratorium we can find time to remember what we never loved enough. These poems sing for mortal creatures, some human, and collect their leavings: skin, bees, infants, fruits, tires. Seared by the world and everything in it, Wilkinson's poems are radiant, damaging, a consuming memorial fire." (Andrea Brady)

Secrecy and the Media - The Official History of the United Kingdom's D-Notice System (Paperback): Nicholas John Wilkinson Secrecy and the Media - The Official History of the United Kingdom's D-Notice System (Paperback)
Nicholas John Wilkinson
R1,568 Discovery Miles 15 680 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Secrecy and the Media is the first book to examine the development of the D-Notice system, which regulates the UK media's publication of British national security secrets. It is based on official documents, many of which have not previously been available to a general audience, as well as on media sources. From Victorian times, British governments have consistently seen the need, in the public interest, to prevent the media publishing secret information which would endanger national security. The UK media have meanwhile continuously resisted official attempts to impose any form of censorship, arguing that a free press is in the public interest. Both sides have normally seen the pitfalls of attempting to resolve this sometimes acrimonious conflict of interests by litigation, and have together evolved a system of editorial self-regulation, assisted by day-to-day independent expert advice, known colloquially as the D-Notice System. The book traces the development of this system from nineteenth-century colonial campaigns, through two world wars, to modern operations and counter-terrorism in the post-Cold War era, up to the beginning of the Labour government in 1997. Examples are drawn from media, political and official sources (some not yet open), and cover not only defence issues (including Special Forces), but also the activities of the secret intelligence services MI5, MI6 and GCHQ. These cases relate principally to the UK, but also to American and other allies' interests. The story of how this sometimes controversial institution now operates in the modern world will be essential reading for those in the media and government departments, and for academics and students in the fields of security, defence and intelligence, as well as being an accessible expose for the general reader. Nicholas Wilkinson served in the Royal Navy 1959-98, and from 1999 to 2004 he ran the independent Defence, Press and Broadcasting Advisory Committee. He was a Press Complaints Commissioner from 2005 to 2008, and is a Cabinet Office Historian.

Laura T. Raynolds, Douglas Murray, John Wilkinson
R1,408 Discovery Miles 14 080 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book explores the challenges and potential of Fair Trade, one of the world's most dynamic efforts to enhance global social justice and environmental sustainability through market based social change.

Fair Trade links food consumers and agricultural producers across the Global North/ South divide and lies at the heart of key efforts to reshape the global economy. This book reveals the challenges the movement faces in its effort to transform globalization, emphasizing the inherent tensions in working both in, and against, the market. It explores Fair Trade's recent rapid growth into new production regions, market arenas, and commodity areas through case studies of Europe, North America, Africa, and Latin America undertaken by prominent scholars in each region. The authors draw on, and advance, global commodity and value chain analysis, convention, and social movement approaches through these case studies and a series of synthetic analytical chapters. Pressures for more radical and more moderate approaches intertwine with the movement's historical vision, reshaping Fair Trade's priorities and efforts in the Global North and South.

Fair Trade will be of strong interest to students and scholars of politics, globalization, sociology, geography, economics and business.

John Wilkinson
R833 Discovery Miles 8 330 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Egeria, who was most probably a Spanish nun, visited the Holy Land only fifty years after the death of Constantine, making her work the earliest surviving account of the area. Her description of the Holy Land, particularly that of Jerusalem, are written with a loving attention to detail, making her the prime source of early Christian pilgrimage and worship. The third edition of John Wilkinson's well-known book is completely updated and as well as a translation of Egeria's account, includes a wealth of information about Egeria, her journey and early liturgy.

From Synagogue to Church: The Traditional Design - Its Beginning, its Definition, its End (Paperback): John Wilkinson From Synagogue to Church: The Traditional Design - Its Beginning, its Definition, its End (Paperback)
John Wilkinson
R1,718 Discovery Miles 17 180 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The designs of synagogues and churches are acknowledged to be very alike. But the designers' procedure was confidential, and so far standard explanations have been unsatisfactory. A synagogue should express heavenly values with earthly materials. This combination was in fact expressed in numbers, for, as Plato said, they linked heaven and earth. Scripture described both the Jewish Tabernacle and Temple with a wealth of numbers. Proportions based on these numbers were used to design synagogues. Only a few Jewish documents survive, but they reveal a symbolism, which Christians sometimes repeat. The synagogue sanctuary was designed to contain the 'Holy Ark', and the mosaic floors reveal the point 'Before the Ark' for the prayers and readings. These places faced each other, with the idea that God was facing his people. The synagogue was seen as facing heaven and in church buildings Christians repeated the same proportions. This was a joint tradition among Jews and Christians. It was easy to design, was carried out secretly and accurately, and - without a computer - was extremely hard to unravel. This book, for the first time, does just that.

Those and a number of other probes are also changing our understanding of the solar system and providing a wealth of new up close photos. This book will cover all these missions and discuss observed surface features of planets and moons like their compositions, geisers, aurorae, lightning phenomena etc.Presenting the fascinating aspects of solar system astronomy this book is a complete guide to the Solar System for amateur astronomers, students, science educators and interested members of the public.

New Eyes on the Sun - A Guide to Satellite Images and Amateur Observation (Paperback, 2012): John Wilkinson New Eyes on the Sun - A Guide to Satellite Images and Amateur Observation (Paperback, 2012)
John Wilkinson
R983 R792 Discovery Miles 7 920 Save R191 (19%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Information collected by satellites recently sent by the USA, the European Space Agency, Japan, Germany, the United Kingdom, and Russia to monitor the Sun has changed our knowledge and understanding of the Sun, particularly its effect on Earth. This book presents these findings in a way that will be welcomed by amateur astronomers, students, educators and anyone interested in the Sun. Enhanced by many colour photographs, the book combines newly acquired scientific understanding with detailed descriptions of features visible on the Sun s surface and in its atmosphere.

In the past, observing the Sun has been left to academics with specialised instruments, since solar observation has been unsafe because of the risk of eye damage. This book explains how amateur astronomers can safely observe the various solar phenomena using special hydrogen-alpha telescopes that are not too expensive. Amateurs can now make a positive contribution to science by monitoring the Sun as professionals do.

Amateurs can also access the solar images taken by satellites via the internet. This book helps readers interpret and understand what these images are showing about the Sun, including the latest 3D images. Solar observers will enjoy comparing their own solar telescope observations with those produced by space probes such as SDO, SOHO, Hinode and STEREO, and further enjoy learning about transits, eclipses, and space weather and how the Sun compares to other stars in the universe.

The main purpose of this book is to present some of the fascinating solar phenomena in their full splendor to readers through a variety of illustrations, photographs and easy to understand text.

My Reef My Manifest Array (Paperback): John Wilkinson My Reef My Manifest Array (Paperback)

R402 R374 Discovery Miles 3 740 Save R28 (7%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In 1487 Sir Henry Bodrugan, pursued for treason, leapt from a Cornish clifftop into a waiting boat and fled to France. Bodrugan’s Leap, as the clifftop has come to be known, lies close to John Wilkinson’s childhood home, and supplies the title for the central cycle of poems in My Reef My Manifest Array. That totemic image of exile feeds an interest in borders and partings that runs throughout the collection. The Cornish landscape of the poet’s childhood, loaded with new significance following the death of his sister, is Wilkinson’s primary locus, but he ventures – flees, perhaps – farther afield, to Portland (Maine), Chicago, Sydney and Busan. Combining extended sequences with brief lyrics, Wilkinson’s lines tie minuscule linguistic knots that give pleasure when unwoven. The reading becomes archaeological as layers and layers of meaning, of feeling, of reason are exposed.

Fugue - Fugue State: John Wilkinson Fugue - Fugue State
John Wilkinson
R505 R435 Discovery Miles 4 350 Save R70 (14%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Fugue State is John Wilkinson’s fifteenth book of poems, and the most fiery. In it, the world is thicker than ever, crowded with all sorts of things, from futures to the exhumed bodies of 80 girls. His muse is a fly, try to catch it. His sentences zigzag. His unique fashion of figuration risks cutting ties with “verisimilitude.” Opposing everything that blocks, hardens, locks, and pursues a single, choke-hold course, he takes his stand on the edge of chaos, not instituted law. Thus would he champion the precept of refreshment, not least the natural cycle of living things. More, he curses “the misbegetting Gods [who] fuck in beach-huts of a cement Lethe.” Data-streams, a “horizon of ones and zeros,” self-driving cars, drones, crypto-currency, robots – these are for him aspects of the concretization of modern culture. Fighting its sway, he is as steely as he is mercurial. Force is good if it’s on the side of “the vital artery.” In the last decade Wilkinson has become a master of the longish poem – here, for instance, ‘East Lake’ and ‘Xipe Totec.’ Of poets now writing in English, he is the freest and most elusive-on-principle, the most capable of pulling out a language blade and using it. —Calvin Bedient Contrapuntal, polyphonic, recursive and baroque, John Wilkinson’s Fugue State sounds the dissociative disorder of our time – and of history itself. “May my transmission glorify each wandering, singular flight,” writes this poet; from the business traveller’s “fugue in a transport café” to a fossilized “insect on a rock discovered in its rock face itself rock,” Wilkinson charts fugitive flight paths through arrest and duration, myth and modernity, art and violence, interiority and collective life. Fugue State exposes us, like the flayed singer Marsyas, to our own “wild skin unfolding.” From this vital material, we might fashion a flag for lifeworlds to come. —Srikanth Reddy
